ISO 179 – Determination of Charpy Impact Properties
ISO 179 specifies the method for determining the Charpy impact strength of plastics under controlled and defined test conditions. The test uses a pendulum impact system to measure the material’s resistance to sudden impact.
In the test, a pendulum (striker) is released from a set angle. As it swings downward, it strikes the specimen at the lowest point of its trajectory. The energy absorbed during impact is calculated from the pendulum’s angle of rise after striking the specimen, providing a direct measure of impact strength.
The Tram testing equipment offers an accessible and automated setup for this method. When a test is performed, the Charpy impact strength is calculated automatically by the TramQA software, ensuring consistent and reliable results.
